Handing out the hallowed hardware
By Marty Smith

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It is 9 p.m., Feb. 20th, and I'm listening intently as Jeff Gordon giddily discusses the magnitude of his third career victory in the Daytona 500.
"This one's even sweeter than the first one or the second one, because I realize more now just how special this place is, and just what it means to win here, in this race."

The depth and tangibility of Gordon's words gets me to thinking: Is this the biggest win of his life? The guy has 70 Cup wins. Is this it?
I think not. Sure it ranks high, but it's not Indy '94.
That's when Gordon did it.
Dale Earnhardt did it on this very piece of real estate in 1998. Dale Jr.? He did it right here a year ago. DJ did it here, too, in '93. Jimmie Johnson hasn't done it yet. Neither has Tony Stewart.
Every racecar driver has the "perfect" victory, the trophy they fantasized about as a child and strived for every year since.
Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace wanted terribly to get it last Sunday in the Daytona 500. Unfortunately, like most of us it looks like they'll never achieve that elusive win.
But you can bet they'll never stop dreaming about it.

What about you? What race would you most love to win, and why?
